Rico is an amazing brown dun Fjord stallion from fantastic Dutch and Norwegian bloodlines. He has a delicate face, huge flashy movement, and an exceptionally sweet and sensitive temperament. We are excited to watch him grow into the distinguished gentleman that we know he will be.
Rico’s claim to fame is his correct, expressive, and beautiful to watch movement. In his young stock evaluations as a weanling he was singled out as an example of lovely movement and referred to as a “treat to watch.” He will likely add sportiness to most mares and is the ideal choice for breeding a fjord destined for a dressage, eventing, or CDE show career.

He has a lovely floaty trot and a smooth balanced canter. Rico can collect and extend, sit and push, and is light on his feet and highly motivated and forward. If you’re looking for energy and grace, Rico is your man.
Rico has exemplary conformation that is not only pleasing to the eye but well suited to his function as a riding and show horse. His wonderful gaits are a result of his ideal limb structure.
His neck is well set on with a long poll and reasonable thickness and length. A large sloping shoulder helps him extend his gaits in front and a proportional hip with good upper and lower limb angles allow him to sit strongly or propel smoothly.
His balanced and square outline prepares him to excel (and accelerate) in any direction without too short a coupling so that his back, although robust, can swing and his topline can stretch. Rico has large, well shaped hooves to compliment his nice straight legs. He’s a bit close in his stance for a fjord, which is partially indicative of his “sport type” build rather than the wider wheel base found on the traditional draftier fjords.
He rates quite well morphologically for breed character and has a very pretty head with a masculine jaw, huge soft eyes, square muzzle, and small cute ears. Rico has a lovely long forelock and tale, but not such a thick mane that hedge trimming feels like a chore!
Rico is a brunblakk (brown dun) with traditional dun markings and the primitive leg barring found in some fjords. Rico is 14 hands even, so not a huge guy, with the potential to throw larger foals with tall mares.
Although as a dressage and working equitation rider, I’m partial to Rico’s lovely gaits, his temperament is what we all love the most. Rico is a sensitive and forward fjord with a good work ethic and quick wit. However he is as sweet and mellow as they come and a loving disposition and real charm when it comes to social time with his people.
Of all my horses, Rico is the most polite about taking a cookie and the most responsive to a correctional aid. He’s extremely brave and likes to be blown with the leaf blower, does all of our mountain trail obstacles with ease, can be persuaded to walk under a low hay elevator moving bales, and spooks less frequently than the human holding him.
Rico is a homebody who’s not dramatic about being inside his stall, loading in the trailer, or tying for the farrier. He also tends to be respectful of mares and is accustomed to living in close contact with them at home, so he’s not an intimidating stallion to breed with live cover. He’s cute and friendly and funny and has a ton of personality!
PedigreeRico was bred by Olivia Farm Inc. and comes from top quality imported lines. Tico, his sire, is a Dutch import originally owned by Green Valley Farm. He’s a very popular stud known for producing a beautiful baby and also cherished for his work ethic, sensitivity, and movement.
Silvia is a white dun from Norway by the elite stallion Frederik Skova. She’s quintessentially Norwegian and has been an invaluable all-around versatility and kids horse as well as a gorgeous mare for halter and breeding stock.I’ve loved both of these exceptional horses for a long time, which is why I bought a plane ticket to visit his breeder the day Rico hit the ground to see if he was the stud for us, and indeed he was even nicer than I had imagined!
Rico is a good choice if you are looking for a stallion with quality movement, correct conformation, a long neck, and a pretty face. Choose Rico if you’re looking to increase athleticism or produce a quality show horse for marketability or your own enjoyment. Rico exemplifies the fancy sport-type fjord without sacrificing on that wonderful, reasonable, intelligent temperament that we all know and love!
